I will start this review by stating that I've always known who Tears For Fears were, and although I liked most of their hits on the radio, never really gave them a chance as anything other than a radio-friendly pop group. Recently, while re-discovering some 80's bands that I listened to when I was young, I decided to give their first two albums a try. (I don't personally like anything beyond Songs From The Big Chair, especially after Curt Smith left the band.) I have to say that I regret not giving this group a chance earlier. Their music is complex and deep, both lyrically and musically. Having missed the chance to have seen them in their 'prime', I decided to purchase one of their concert releases. To my disappointment, there aren't many official concert releases from the band on DVD. The Going To California release consisted of mostly material I don't really care for, and The Scenes From The Big Chair documentary, while it may have some good concert footage, isn't really a full concert experience. (Though I will probably give both a try eventually...) I then decided to find a good VHS copy of In My Mind's Eye since I have a working VCR. Gladly, I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!! From start to finish, the band go through an awesome setlist consisting mostly of material from their album The Hurting, with some great performances by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. It is really interesting to see the band at this early stage, just before they made it big. There is also an early version of BrokenHead Over Heels that is for me, a highlight of the concert. Though the camera is mostly on Roland and Curt, the presence of Manny Elias and Jerry Marotta is felt thoughout with some wicked drum and percussion work. (I especially like the Marinbas!) I highly recommend this video to anyone into Tears For Fears or to someone who might be interested in checking out this multi-platinum selling, seminal band at their best. If there is only one downside to mention about this release, it is the inclusion of some cheesy 80's special effects that appear throughout. While they are mostly just plain distracting, sometimes they add to the experience and can be downright funny! So I say, just go with the flow, light one up, and Rock On!Read full review
