Scenes From A Memory, the album released by the band Dream Theater in 1999 is what many call a masterpiece of an album. It is also a significant release for the band due to the fact that it was a do or die period for the band and also tis was the first Dream Theater release to feature Jordan Rudess on Keyboards. The album itself is a very deep concept album and follows the events of Nicholas, a man recieving regression therapy for his strange dreams. This DVD shows the band performing the entire album live at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. Not only does the band play the entire album, but it is semi acted out ie-a couch on stage with an actor portraying the therapist and James Labrie on the couch telling the therapist of these dreams. Also, for the song "The Spirit Carries On", A full choir is utilized. Along with the physical acting and portrayal, A wonderful use of video is provided going right along with the story. THe sound quality of the DVD is wonderful. The picture is very clear and does wonderful justice to the performance of the band and each of it's members. Special features on the special edition are very generous and include audio options, a featurette on the behind the scenes portion of the concert, a wonderful photo gallery, "deleted scenes" which includes the other songs performed that evening. They include "Erotomania", "Voices", "The silent man", "Learning to Live" and the Epic "A Change of Seasons". this makes for about a four hour concert! the other wonderful feature is FULL length audio commentary by the band. Now this is great because they explain the plot of the story in depth as the show progresses and it is easy for someone who may not have a clue about the album to catch on and understand. Its also great to listen to the guys commenting on the show. I would highly highly reccomend this DVD to anyone into Dream Theater or The genre of Progressive Rock. And its not one of those DVD's youre gonna watch one time and never open it again..trust me.Read full review
This is the last performance of the Scenes from a Memory album promoting world tour the band made in 2000. It was done in New-York and they played the entire Scenes from a Memory album as a first set and after they played numerous classics including A Change of Season and Erotomania. Jordan Ruddess is part of the bunch and boy does it sound good. As a live DVD you get to see each member doing their stuff and what it does take to make it sound like you already heard it on the album, but as a bonus you get improvised solos from John Petrucci, and most of the others since DT is like this, they add stuff as they go... in this concert is also featured a full choir (for the epic One Last Time) and Theresa Thomason an hired singer that does add some spice to the songs with additionnal vocal and improvisation. Overall the video and audio quality is good, but the stage is relatively crappy compared to their next DVD's Budokan and Radio City Music Hall. However they do play nicely, Labrie can almost sing every notes the high way, other than for the high F# in Learning to Live, amd Mike Portnoy gets tired at the end and in the second set mostly, he doesn't give as much as he usually do live, with drum fills and never ending finals (he actually passed out from fatigue after the concert). This is Dream Theater and there is nice lot of bonus to keep you entertained if your a fan and personally I have found very interesting, almost more interesting then watching let alone the DVD video, doing it with the band commentary overlapped. This is a nice instructional, inside view on what's really going on the stage, as the band members watch it with you and narrate their view, comment, laugh. Most of these bonuses aren't in the VHS edition of the concert, that's why I naturally suggest you to buy the DVD I also bought.Read full review
I was always a Dream Theater fan but after seeing this DVD I became a dedicated Dream Theater fan for life! IMO it is absolutely the best musical DVD out there. The band's playing is unbelievable and the theater setting makes the show very intimate. Seeind the story line live with all the extra video footage really brings the story Metropolis pt.2 to life. You also get an extra bonus with the other deleted songs section where they play Change of Seasons in it's entirety as well as other DT favorites like Erotomania. You won't be disappointed with this DVD guaranteed!!
Awesome video! Love the sound and the video quality.
