Miles always had a trick or two in the wings. This CD is the only one with Sam Rivers on tenor. The notes are full of information about this event and what led to Mr. Rivers joining the group for a historic tour of Japan. The sonics are good for a recording dating back to the 60's. Somehow the last cut skips on my player and I can't figure out why. For those Miles fans out there this a must for your collection especially if you never heard Sam play and play he does.
This is an amazing time capsule. Sam Rivers and Miles Davis in the front line of a changing jazz climate. The real treat here to me was listening to 18 year old Tony Williams propel this band. Ron Carter is up to the task of dealing with Tony and holding it all together. Herbie Hancock defines the current piano role. I recommend this CD to the jazz purists and students of the genre highly!
