I've been a big Beefheart collector since around 1981 and have pretty much everything they've ever done, so I really needed the extra tracks. I've already had the album since the early `80's. "Kandy Korn" is my fave track on the album. Having it on a CD is convenient, but hearing the original vinyl version is better. "Troutmaskreplica", "Clear Spot", "The Spotlight Kid", "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" and "Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)" are my fave albums of theirs. In the `80's, there was book written called, "Desert Island" (or maybe, "Desert Island Records", I forget). It askes various people which album they would pick to be able to listen to if they were stranded on a desert island with only one album to listen to. One of the many responses was "Troutmaskreplica". A very truncated version of why they'd pick that album was "Because you can listen to it over and over again and always find something in it you've never heard before". Most of the Captain Beefheart records are like this. About the only ones that aren't were the two commercial albums he did in the early `70's, "Bluejeans And Moonbeams" and "Unconditionally Guarenteed".Read full review
Well, not one of his best. As I recall this was released from some archive tapes owned by Buddah records after the buzz and realtive success of Trout Mask Replica. It consists of some long rambling tunes - simple basic forms/structures stretched out and jammed out. It's not bad - if you're a Beefheart fan you'll eventually want to own this .... but ... if you're new to Beefheart it's not the best place to start. The clunky jungle beat drums, the metal finger appendage slide guitar, the harmonica and voice are all there, but the arrangements are not developed or tight.
