Has it really been 40 years ? 1968 and 13 years of age when I first heard this “strange band” from Leicester probably on the John Peel show and I was hooked ! From the first bars of the manic opener “the Chase” you can tell this is a band to be reckoned with . This their debut album was a touch of 60s psychedelia leaning heavily on early Floyd and Traffic and was somewhat over-produced by Traffic’s Dave Mason with rather too much on that terrible “phasing” so popular at the time . Despite re-mastering some of the recording quality is terrible but it is all too easy to pick holes in what is undeniably a stunning debut . There was certainly no masking Roger Chapman’s barking growling almost strangulated vocals (is that Feargal Sharkey my wife naively asks !) and the band’s virtuoso multi-instrumentalism . Coupled with Chapman and guitarist John “Charlie” Whitney innovative song-writing this was a band that defied description equally at home with orchestral ballads as out and out rockers . All in all any serious student of rock music (is that me ?) has to have this album as an intro to one of our greatest ever and sadly short-lived rock bands . The album is worth it for the haunting “Mellowing grey” alone oh yes and the unforgettable cover . Get a copy ! Kittyalex123 20th June 2008Read full review
