The first CD, the ostensible follow up to Thick as Brick, whihc was abandoned is quite good. So this music is less fussy than Passion Play and better for it. The second disc is more erratic but still has some enjoyable cuts. Clearly this is for Tull fans, not Tull 101, per se. But compared to the brainless music of today its great stuff. (had to get in the post-1990's insult somewhere in this review)
I am a hardcore Tull fan. I bought the original version of this 2 CD set as an import in 1993 when it first came out. Those of you who like most (or at least some)of the Jethro Tull catalog will like much of the second CD which is a collection of rare and unreleased songs spanning several years. Some were released as now hard to find CD singles and others were not released until this CD. My favorites here are Paradise Steakhouse, Silver River Turning, Rosa On The Factory Floor, I Don't Want To Be Me,and Piece Of Cake. This CD is a real treat and a refreshing change from the over played Tull tunes that FM radio helped beat to death. The first CD will most likely be appreciated by the hardcore fan. Here you will find the Chateau D'Isaster Tapes. The liner notes will explain this much better but in brief these tapes were recorded circa 1973-74 and have been sought after by many a hardcore fan for a very long time. Some of this CD can be found on the 20th Anniversary 3cd set (1988) and on the cut down single 20th Anniversary CD. If you like Tull's Passion Play (1973) you are likely to treasure this CD as well. All in all this is and outstanding 2 CD set.Read full review
