This album is, in my own opinion, the perfect introduction to symphonic themed metal for anybody. One of the things I like the most about this album is the depth of the symphony of synthesizers and the deep mythology and fantasy themed lyrics. Every song on this album is a piece of majesty that brings nostalgia of the sound of late 90s synthesizers, and my own childhood love for high fantasy and magic to the forefront. Being fairly deep into both the synthesizer scene and the death metal scene; I perhaps cannot say the same about later Nightwish and Tarja albums, but there is nothing "girly" or inferior about Oceanborn. This album also tends to evoke melancholy memories in for me, because of the more recent break in Nightwish. Though Tarja's voice was quintessential to the magical feeling of Oceanborn, I'll always feel that the emotional layered songwriting of Tuomas, as well as his wonderfully poetic lyrics, were what made Oceanborn such a memorable and emotional album for me.Read full review
While "Sleeping Sun" (hidden track 11) and "Walking in the Air"(an operatic cover) are good, I wouldn't purchase this CD again. Very early work from Nightwish (11 years ago...they look so young in the inserts). A good start for the band, but their best work didn't begin until "Century Child." Check out that CD, "Once" or "Dark Passion Play" instead of this one.
I love this CD, for one of the first albums by this band, Nightwish, it is epic. Which holds high standards for the following albums, that they of course surpass. A disappointment is of course finding the CD at all let alone the remastered version. But overall I am grateful to find this CD at such a great price range.
