Hmmm... you need to be a hardcore fan of prog rock to like this. If you are, you should buy it. If not, not.

This cd wasn’t what I thought it would be. Heavier than I had hoped. If you like heavy music it will suit you. A couple of the tracks were really good. I am sure if you like Dream Theatre you will love it.

This is certainly of Dream Theater's heavier albums, right from the start John Petrucci's guitar coupled with Myung's bass drive home that this will be a treat (if a somewhat loud one!). Octavarium, the title track, is a fantastic epic that combines metal with Dream Theater's prog inspirations - there are certainly parts where you could easily imagine Rush or even Yes playing a few sections. I Walk Beside You is a pleasant radio friendly (only 4mins long) rock song that is sure to appeal to anyone who enjoys rock or metal. The Answer Lies Within reminds me of their crowd favourite The Spirit Carries On, it has a similar epic and slow moving feel. The Root of All Evil is an exemplary starting point to the album continuing straight on from Train of Thought, they even replay the final piano chords of that previous album. Panic Attack and Never Enough are for me the two weak songs on the album, they seem to have been thrown in more as a filler than for any other prpose. Finally Sacrificed Sons is a harrowing song which masterfully includes news headlines about 9/11 and can send chills up your spine! Overall agreat album let down somewhat by the two middle songs, but certainly good enough to earn a place in anyone's collection even if you're not a Dream Theater fan.Read full review
this album is fantastic in my opinion.i highly recomend it to anyone and not just for hard rock or metal fans, it has aspects from all different genres.8 songs each in a key corrisponding to the 8 notes of the c major scale.everything on this album is well thought about, you can tell they really took their time to write the songs.if your buying a dream theater album for the first time, i definatly recomend this one.this will be classed as a classic for sure.
OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE and their breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS.
