Additional information
Fairport Convention: Simon Nicol (vocals, guitar); Maartin Allcock (guitar, mandocello, bouzar, accordion, bodhran, background vocals); Ric Sanders (violin); Dave Pegg (mandolin, bass, background vocals). Recorded at Woodworm Studios, Barford St. Michael, England and live at Banbury Mill Theatre, Banbury, England on December 30, 1995. Includes liner notes by Fairport Convention. Fairport Convention followed 1995's JEWEL IN THE CROWN, their first new release in five years, with this fine assortment. Though the band has never really headed in the direction of the blues--or of anything blue--the title spells out Fairport's long-standing modus operandi. Opening with violinist Ric Sander's "Woodworm Swing," the band visits the terrain of Grappelli/Rheinhardt. The set closes with a medley of Fairport staples, "Matty Groves/Dirty Linen." In between are new originals by band members, songs by Loudon Wainwright ("Men" and "The Swimming Song"), James Taylor ("Frozen Man"), and Ralph McTell ("The Hiring Fair"). "Genesis Hall" and "Crazy Man Michael," old favorites by Fairport's most famous alumnus, Richard Thompson, are also featured. Warm and crisply recorded, OLD-NEW-BORROWED-BLUE shows a band of veterans still clearly energized by the act of playing together.
