Peter Banks was the first guitarist for Yes, but left after the second album. Creative differences and an atmosphere with too many vituosos (Rick Wakeman, Chris Squire, et al) he went on to found the Art Rock/Prog Rock band Flash. Basically a three piece power trio, they did multi-tracking to make the studio stuff sound fuller, with Peter Banks playing ARP synth (remember those?)and some other basic keyboards. I always thought Peter Banks was a better guitarist than Steve Howe and ironically although he was blamed for the dense orchestral mix on Yes's first album, Flash mixes were always pretty spare with the three major players front and center. I was introduced to Flash "back in the day" by a bass player friend of mine who was way into the English Progressive scene and I really thought the jazzy, more unencumbered guitar and song structure was refreshing after a steady diet of blues-based hard rock and acid-tinged psychedelia that I was listening to and playing at the time. The lyrics were never the strong suit of this band and sound trite and dated, but I think the instrumental accomplishment and song structure holds up with lots of time signature changes and nice interplay between guitar and bass. This is one of three albums Flash released before sinking from sight in the mid-'70's and I had been looking for tracks on iTunes before doing a search here on eBay and finding this along with the other album. A slice of English Prog Rock nostalgia to be sure, but still listenable for an old, burned out Rock guitarist like myself.Read full review
