This was the debut album for Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor and Jerry Gaskill, henceforth known as King's X. They would acquire a cult like following from this albums release that stands still today. The truly great thing about this album is the fact that, when hair bands where spewing the same old crap that people seemed to eat up because it was always on the radio, these guys took it upon themselves to create a new version of the genre. Out of the Silent Planet is a rock/funk/jazz and blues without the horns fusion that broke new ground. I would compare it to the genius of Steely Dan in the 70's, when they took the classic rock sound and added jazz/blues/soul to create their own sound. Harmonies on vocals are the earmark of King's X. These guys were born to sing together. Jerry (drummer) and Ty (guitar) have the perfect voices to blend in as backup to Doug's (bass) soulful, low key bluesy sound. The standouts on the album are: "In The New Age" which has one of the coolest bass lines I have ever heard, "Goldilox" which is a love song of sorts, "King" which was an early sign of their ability to play on words brilliantly, "Shot Of Love" which uses harmony like only the Beatles could do before. Remaining songs on the album are strong at least. This is a stand-up, take no prisoners, this is who we are, welcome to King's X album and they don't apologize. Thankfully, they didn't quit. Almost 20 years later, they are still going strong. A great intro album and a must have.Read full review
From the first riff on "In the new age" I was hooked. It's a super example of who King's X would go on to become. A great look at Doug Pinicks vocals and Ty's riffs and tone. Goldilox is a killer song and really captures a mood for me everytime I hear it. I love Dougs vocals on this song. I could write what I love about every song on this album. It's such a tight album throughout and anyone who appreciates great music should own this album. King's X has never gotten the credit they deserve. This album has it all, great songs, vocal harmonies and guitar tone to kill for. Ty Tabor is an extremely underated guitarist and his voice on the guitar is so distinct you can always pick him out from the first note you hear.
I started with the second album and was very excited to get this one. I always thought nothing could compare with "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" or the self titled album, but "Out of the Silent Planet" is the kind of formidable debut only King's X could release. The songs are dense, direct, uplifting, and great for rocking out to. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who misses overlooked bands from the late '80s, early '90s who got pushed aside when grunge hit the scene (no offense to grunge, love those bands too), who rocked with an integrity not found with many of the hair bands from that time!
Overlooked band that should be huge. Progressive hard rock that is essential for any rock fan.
