Nver really heard much of any Peter Hammill solo work , but loved VDGG , so found this quite enjoyable . Although classed as more commercial ( ? ) than VDGG , it is still not in the realms of popular / chart material ,far from it . Very distinctive not a million miles from his group work , it is well worth a listen .

Fool's Mate was released between H to He and the VDGG Magnum opus Pawn Hearts. However it is stylistically very different from these two records. In fact it has more in common with the Aerosol Gray Machine which is not surprised when you take into account that the songs were composed around the same time. The recording is of an exceptionally high standard for its time. All of the boys from VDGG are included including Nic Potter who had left the band during the H to He recording. The songs are brilliant as is the musicianship. Bob Fripp plays on a lot of the tracks as do a couple of musicians from Lindisfarne. In addition to the original LP we are also treated to a number of demo tapes that feature just the VDGG band. A really refreshing record and one you really should own.
