High Holy Hills is the new album for Detroit's Poor Player, a ragtag group of beer sipping musicians who would rather talk about The Man than lament over their love lives. And that's what this album is - a conversation that draws you in with the folksy rasps of lead singer Matt Fredericks. But the catchy songs soon give way to a Guthrie-esque look at a world run by the rich for the rich. Poor Player looks to point out the hypocrisies of the world without descending into a fit of endless complaining (a lesson they likely learned from the whiny nineties - don't overdo it!). Rather than hit you over the head with their opinions, the songs wink and nod at you, buy you a beer in between political points, and take you on trips through uncorrupted nature. The optimism in this album lies not in a solution to the gloomy reality put forth, but in the self-awareness gained by opening one's eyes. "Pee Wee's Standuppity Blues" sets the tone for the album immediately noting how, while white men were inventing democracy, they were not so generous to their darker skinned brothers. Pee Wee tours the world and history, questioning maxims like "why must a good a neighbor make a good fence?" Like that sage customer at the bar, Pee Wee urges the listener to compare injustices of the past and present to the world outside their door. "El Diablo" brings back memories of a certain Rolling Stones' ditty, but the devil that is detailed in this song is not the epic fallen angel, but a charismatic cult of personality that leads mindless minions through their pathless lives. Frederick gleefully announces the presence El Diablo throughout the song with a vocal technique that connotes both joy and surprise. The narrative uses the perspective of the flock that follows this gent through the deserts of America that seem to morph into the deserts of the New Testament, as El Diablo pranks a leper in a rather un-Jesus way. I confess that "Thick as Thieves" is one of my favorite songs on the album from a musical standpoint as it reminds me of the earthy tones of Jolie Holland, who would approve of the autumnal feel of this song. Again, a conversation about a world gone wrong is buried under the atmosphere of wispy instruments and Fredericks even adjusts his modified croon to a whisper to fit the mood of the song. "Upon the Blue Ridge Mountains" offers an escape from the world Poor Player has brought to the forefront. The joyous twang and rollicking melody of this ditty brings a brief respite and gently suggests that there are alternatives to the listener off the grid of modern life. Again Fredericks alters his voice to fit the mood of the song bringing a little extra southern accent to this track. He coyly steps aside often allowing the music to speak for him and for the rest of us to book our next getaway to southern Virginia. But Fredericks quickly snarls his way through the next track in "Death Row Fantasy" reminding that trips to nature are well and good, but there is something happening and you don't know what it is...do you Mr. Jones? What I like about this song is the blunt instrument the band uses to bludgeon the dwindling class of entitled white males who see injustices like the electric chair as mere abstractions. The uncompromising blues chords hammer the point home even if the intended object of the lyrics is too oblivious to listen. Jumping ahead to the last track on the album, "No Police in Paradise (Please!)" is my favorite. It reminded me of the utopian vision of an anti-authoritarian society in the old standard "Big Rock Candy Mountain." The song is not only one of the catchiest on the album, it is a cleverly constructed firing quick-witted suggestions for a better world with the speed of rubber bullets and an ascending pitch that underscores the urgency of song's imperative.
