Rachel Portman wrote the music for the Cider House Rules, which came along after she won an Oscar for the score she did for the film "Emma". She was the first woman to ever win an Academy Award for a motion picture score, although female performers and writers had previously won awards at the Oscars in the category of Best Song. The Cider House Rules, however, is an unbelievably fine film score, and the soundtrack CD is perfectly produced for the listener who wants to quietly relive the film experience or just pass an evening in peaceful contemplation. I consider this recording to be of an almost historic importance, along with other Portman compositions. It is definitely one of my all-time favorites.
You may recognize the theme from the PURE MICHIGAN ads that appear on TV. A pleasant, delightful soundtrack that only adds to the enhancement of the pleasant, delightful movie. Good, original soundtracks are getting rarer these days. I highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys the wonderful experience that a well-scored soundtrack brings to a motion picture.
