Jon's Hassell Power Spot, produced by famed team Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, is a great effort and a worthy addition to any Jon Hassell fan. The only other Hassell album I own is Fourth World: Possible Musics which is one of my favorite albums of all time. Power Spot is not quite as amazing as Fourth World, but still worth the purchase. If you haven't heard Hassell's trumpet, then you should know that sounds unlike any other trumpet. It is very breathy with Hassell actually using his own voice to create notes inside the trumpet. It is very distinctive. Overall, Power Spot is an aggresive album with driving rhythms throughout the album. Most of the songs follow roughly the same pattern of a backing rhythm section with some overlay of electronic washes or blips and Hassell soloing over the whole thing. Some of the songs are slower such as Passage DE and The Elephant and the Orchid. The tracks Power Spot and Wing Melodies and much faster with a nonstop beat. Air features flautist Miguel Frasconi and Hassell intertwining their respective instruments in a sort of dance of the wind. This track is definitely one of the highlights of the album. If you are already a Jon Hassell fan and don't have this album, get it. If you are perhaps a Brian Eno/Talking Heads fan and dug the track Houses in Motion featuring Hassell's trumpet throughout, then you would do well to either check out this album or the transcendental Fourth World, Possible Musics.Read full review
