Brilliant Album by the Generator after a few years layoff Class

It has taken me some time to getting around to reviewing this record. I was initially very disappointed as it sounds far more like a P.Hammill solo effort than a band set. This feeling persists and when I consider that this was marketed as a double set, I feel a little cheated. The studio side is OK with at least 4 good tracks but the other disk is awful. The best track is the instrumental on CD1. There is nothing here that compares favorably with this bands prime output. I suppose it is a must have for VDGG fans, but even so it is a far cry from their best work. It is closest in feel to World Record which it self was a substandard set. This lineup recorded a resonable good live album and then split up with Jaxon going his own way. Thew next record called trisector is leaps and bounds better than this. Present could have been an old fashioned two track single and would have worth that sort of money. As it is a double album (ha ha) it is simple exploitation of the fan base something that they seem to have fallen for. This and the awfully expensive and seriously underwhelming the "Box", have diluted the bands legacy enormously. This trend of ripping the fans off is seriously off putting. The recent set of remasters had a few worthwhile extras but was also padded out with a great deal of bootleg quality recordings that just ruin the records. I suppose I'll carrying on buying the records as they are released but its due to my fond memories that I really value this band and not for their recent output which seems to be about having a decent pension. On the strength of Present they deserve to be downgraded to a 3rd rate prog band...shame on you P.H.Read full review
Found and bought by chance, I'm very happy to get a new part of the progressive rock history with this record. Peter hammill's voice is still the same, so deep, so nice !!!
