Stackridge is reformed and touring again - my advice is get out and see them live - James Warren, Mutter Slater, Andy Davis and Crun Walter - the original creative drive behind the band, together and better than ever....with Glenn Tommey on keyboards, Eddie John on drums, Sarah Mitchell on violin and backing vocals and ? ? playing the Mike Evans violin parts. This collection comes mainly from their first 3 albums, with only Fish in a Glass and the instrumental Coniston Water from the 'Mr Mick' album. The title track is re-recorded, this time with everyone playing in the same key! I am not sure how it can be subtitled 'Best of' with the omission of 'Slark' which is the tune most people will remember - the short 'single' version should, in my humble view, have been included as its a great song. I would also have liked another offering sung by Mutter, such as 'The Volunteer' from the Extravaganza album, but this is always the problem with a compilation - you cannot please everyone - so the answer really is buy this double CD, and then ask your friends to buy you Stackridge CDs as birthday presents -that's true 'Friendliness' for you! (and if you get repeats, just sell them on ebay!)...and there are some great 'new' songs as well....don't forget the recent CDs.....Steven T PS...did i mention that Stackridge were the first band to play at.....no? well, that was a long time ago....go and see them live......you will leave with a smile on your face and whistling Slark!.......NOW!Read full review
Excellent collection of 15 songs from throughout Stackridge's career dating back to early 1970s. Opening with the infectious instrumental Lummy Days, we have a mixture of whimsical songs about mythical creatures (Syracuse the Elephant, The Galloping Gaucho) to wonderful harmonies on Fundamentally Yours and Friendliness. Influenced by the Beatles, Frank Zappa and the original Fleetwood Mac. Highlights too many to mention but my personal favourites are Do The Stanley (surely the most underrated hit that never was!) and the marvelous Road To Venezuela with it's catchy but wacky chorus. Stackridge fans look out for a re-recorded version of the title track - worth buying for this alone. If you're feeling down, play this is guaranteed to lift your spirits and bring a smile to your face!
