A nice album, only three tracks long, but two of those are over 9 minutes a piece, and one is over 21 minutes long. The synthesizers are not done by Rick Wakeman, and if you don't like Wakeman's style, you might like this better. Steve Howe is all over his guitar. There's plenty of the typical six string electric, but also get to hear the sitar, and slide guitar. Styles range from Baroque to almost Blue Grass. Bass rhythms pump out quite nicely in some parts, very creative in others. The whole band gets their vocals in here and there with nice harmony. Gates of Delerium features some experimental percussion around the middle section, and some very nice mood music throughout. With a wide variety of styles, all one needs do is listen for a few minutes to find something you may enjoy.
One of my all time favorite Yes albums, very close in nature to Topographic Oceans yet very unique. Such a great build up in the first track to the main solo, and I think the studio run-through may even be better. The album slows down by the last track, but that's not to say it's not beautiful in its own way. Such an enjoyable album that I wish it had been longer, but that's alright. This is one GREAT album! I believe Very Adventurous sums up the way I feel about this! The whole feeling of the album is very emotional.
I think its one of there most innovative CD`s it rocks,it`s one of there more intense music in the style that only yes can do
I'm a huge Yes fan, and its been a long time since I've heard this recording. As a trained musician myself, I can appreciate the complexity of this effort from Yes. Three recordings on the whole cd! If you like prog/art rock, like listening to music alone in the dark and want to take a trip without leaving home, purchase this recording.
