I love the way the movie connects the Medici with a lot of the major historical art figures of Renaissance Florence. Michaelangelo, Botticelli, and also the scientist Galileo were all sponsored by the wealthy Medici banker family. The way they tied it all together, emphasizing on the way that essentially the entire Florentine Renaissance was sponsored by the Medici family. Another highlight was how the Medici family was indirectly responsible for the Protestant Reformation in Northern Europe. Excellent film and very educational. I decided to buy it because my wife is taking Art History and she used it to further her understanding of the Italian Renaissance, especially with the Florentines.
Hey, I'm well traveled and born a Catholic. I had no idea the DEPTH of the Medici impact on the world. The Medici "made it happen" insofar as Michelangelo, a POPE, Galileo and this documentary moves much quicker than the "time" it indicates (several hours). This because it is so enthralling, entertaining and informative. I happen to love history and always want to understand things so as a "history buff" this fills my need to know just how big an impact the Medici had on our world TODAY. It misses touching on the impact the Medici Pope had on Martin Luther and it should have slighly touched on that fact. Do not hesitate to include this as a gift and as part of your personal collection. It is nothing less than crucial for understanding the past but even more so, the last hundred years, Catholicism (sp?), and, the amazing drama of it all. Humbly yours Andy in MaineRead full review
Thought I knew a great deal about the Medici but I was not nearly well enough informed. This DVD, even though it still didn't tell the whole story, probably due to time constraints on USA TV programs, informed me of many facts I DID NOT know! Thank You!

Very interesting 4 part series. You certainly get your money's worth. The dvd follows the Medici family from inception to the end of their reign - and includes information on many of the important artists that made a contribution to the world - that may not have happened had it not been for the Medici family as patrons of the arts. If you are a history buff or just someone wanting to learn more about Italian history - this is a very good dvd to watch. It gives a great deal of indepth historical information and holds your attention throughout.
The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance is a documentary that introduces the viewer to the Renaissance family of the Medicis from their early rise to power and prominence in the early Renaissance in Florence Italy and their becoming without peer in the mid Renaissance serving as patrons to many of the finest Italian Renaissance artists including Michelangelo to the demise and the family's fall from power and grace due to a lack of personal leadership. It incorporates reinactments, interviews of historians and on site filming. Well worth the watch!
