the songs on side one alone are worth buying this album pretty solid debut from Rainbow (setting the stage for their excellent follow up Rainbow Rising)-----there are parts on this record where it seems the band is trying to find it's way excellent vocals and great guitar work....a really good hard rock album

Ritchie Blackmore, finishing his tenure with Deep purple, merged his sound with a band called Elf.They were fronted by vocalist Ronnie James Dio.This was the first of many Rainbow recordings but the first and last for who played on this debut with the exception of Blackmore and Dio.After this record future band members would come and go;leaving on their own or being fired(?).It was Blackmores band and he called the shots.Had something to do with the work ethic. Listening to this album it is lightweight compared to what you hear today. But back then it was pretty heavy.Dio's voice and Blackmores guitar provided new direction and a new sound but keeping things heavy.Martin Birch was brought in to spin/push the dials like he did with Purple's albums.Just listen to the opening riff of Man on the Silver Mountain. Also things could mellow too like the melodic Temple of the King.Great album to start with.Their second is even better(Rainbow Rising).Read full review
This is one the best of the band Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore. If you like only Dio it works if you like Blackmore it works.
