I originally purchased this CD when it came out some years ago. Later it won a Grammy. I friend who is a big time "Bluegrass" music fan. I visited him and his wife last month and listened to a "Bluegrass" CD that my friend and his twin had recorded years ago. (Just a couple of good ole Kentucky boys,) Any way, since they like Ms. Allyson Krauss (one queen of Bluegrass) I thought they might like a copy of her strange collaboration with Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) . It may be an acquired taste, but I like it - Haven't heard from my friend yet (probably in shock)

Granted, this is not a CD you pop in to the player and start dancing. If that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere (and why you'd think you get that from Ms. Krauss, a bluegrass icon and Mr. Plant, a hard rock god is a very ponderous question). This is a musical "experience" CD whereby two very talented vocalists run through a repertoire of all covers, selected by an iconoclast's iconoclast with musical accompaniment provided by some of the best session men in the business. T-Bone Burnett, who produced this disc, finds an oddly perfect pitch in this combination. Whereas this could be just a run through of some tried and true classics that builds cachet just from the unique pairing of Ms. Krauss and Mr. Plant, Mr. Burnett instead instills a sense of reverence, beauty and wonder with the arrangements of the songs and the delicacy of the recording. Of course, there is irrevence at times, especially when Ms. Krauss delivers an unorthodox first person performance of a vocal intended for a male singer ("Through the Morning, Through the Night") and the duo tackles Mr. Plant's recent, obscure "Please Read the Letter" in a way that makes it seem like an ancient classic. The best song on the disc is "Killing the Blues" whose title signifies the genre busting approach of this collaboration- these people are just creating beautiful, evocative music that echoes and recalls the melange of backgrounds and approaches of all the contributors. By not adhering to the rules, however, they create something that challenges the listener to take the music on its intrinsic value alone without concern for the dogma or discipline of any one genre or approach. Each song has its own familiar yet odd feel, like you've heard it before but not exactly in the way you are hearing it now. Don't buy this unless you like to hear something new and fresh- if you have an idea about how this will sound based on your previous impressions of Ms. Krauss and Mr. Plant, let me suggest that you will probably not hear what you were expecting. You will hear something better, you will hear the performances and the music like you've never heard before.Read full review
Too much country Twang. Very slow moving, I keep waiting for Bob to say C'mon, C'mon, C'mon, and put some energy into this album... At least an Oooh Yeah, but it's just not there. An OK mix between country and rock, the voices match really well, but just seems to lack that OOMPH that Robert Plant usually gives to his music, no matter what genre. Not because he's too old to do it, he's been consecutive throughout his 62 years. As far as Alison, She's got a lot to learn to stand next to an icon such as Robert Plant.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the combination of these two voices. This whole album is great for the quiet times when a good book and a roaring fire with a glass of wine means relaxation. Their voices blend to create a whole that causes me to pause and enjoy the harmonics. I feel it was worth every penny I spent after discovering them via YouTube. If you are looking for rock and roll, you will not find it here. Instead you will find appreciation for two fine voices controlling your interest without disguises from background instruments. Instead the instrumentals enhance the power and control these two give to every song. I would LOVE to hear more from these two together. Nancy, an eclectic music lover
Love this cd. It's a 🏆 Even though it was recorded a number of years ago, it's timeless.
