It has been many years since Roger Powell released a solo album, and this music shows it was worth the wait. Collaborating with Greg Koch on guitar and bass, with Gary Tanin adding his own touch to composition as well as production and arrangements, Powell has created more depth on this album than his previous two solo albums, 1973's Cosmic Furnace and 1980's Air Pocket. Clocking in at about 51 minutes of purely instrumental music, there's a lot to love with Fossil Poets. I haven't heard guitar-keyboard interplay this good since, well, back when Roger traded lead solos with Todd Rundgren during their days in Utopia. The difference in technology during the twenty-five-plus years since Air Pocket has given the material a much fresher sound. And these musicians helped create layers of sound that aren't overly busy. Its superb blend of performance and high-quality production, without sounding pretentious, made me very happy I bought this album, and I think you'll be happy too. Fans of Brian Eno, Eddie Jobson and Robert Fripp will most likely enjoy this album very much. If you're looking for inventive instrumental music, look no further.Read full review
