One of the true essentials in the vast Zappa catalogue this is one of the recordings that no Zappa fan can be without. Mostly recorded live at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood in 1973 with studio overdubs added to some parts later (and the ’elsewhere’ parts in Chicago and Illinois), Frank leads this well rehearsed line up of top rate musicians through a thoroughly entertaining repertoire. Whatever Frank used to say about disliking people in general and musicians for their weaknesses, his warmth, humour and sense of fun are evident all over this recording. From the mini opera of ‘Cheepnis’ the savvy stage antics of ‘BeBop Tango’ to the sheer beauty of ‘Village of the Sun’ the distinctive sound of the 73/74 band makes most other live records (excluding Frank’s of course) sound dull and reserved. Many of his fans consider this band to be the best of all the live groups of musicians he used, and the individual musicians give a great account of themselves;Napoleon Brock’s vocal pyrotechnics showcase a performer on top of his game, whilst Ruth Underwood (percussion) George Duke (keys) Chester Thompson and Ralph Humphrey (drums) display dazzling technique without ever sounding strained. And who could forget Bruce Fowler’s trombone soloing? If you know this record, you don’t need me to tell you anything. If you don’t .....buy it!Read full review
