After leaving his first band, The Nazz, Todd Rundgren became a producer/engineer for Albert Grossman's Bearsville label, born from Ampex. Rundgren's production abilities gave him the chance to produce artists like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Halfnelson (soon to become Sparks), and The American Dream. Todd later went on to produce Grand Funk Railroad's 'We're An American Band' and Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out Of Hell.' While cutting his teeth producing Grossman's signees, Todd Rundgren took some studio time of his own. Recruiting Hunt and Tony Sales (sons of television personality Soupy Sales) and several other musicians, Rundgren created an eclectic collection of songs ranging from tender ballads ('Believe In Me', 'Once Burned') to blues jams ('Birthday Carol', 'Broke Down And Busted') and a minor pop hit in 'We Gotta Get You A Woman'. While a lot of this album is strong, it's a little uneven. Experiments like the a cappella number 'There Are No Words' and the sarcastic 'I'm In The Clique' provide some contrast to the stronger songs on this album. And a medley of pop numbers that would have been good individually - 'Baby Let's Swing/Last Thing You Said/Don't Tie My Hands' - previewed what was to come for Todd as a songwriter. I rated this album Good because this album is so uneven, but there are some very good moments on this album beyond the single. If you're looking for some of Todd Rundgren's early works, here's an offering that delivered an interestingly surprising mix of different styles. Todd commented that he rented many instruments that he used to make this album, a fact that isn't surprising considering what a master multi-instrumental wiz Todd became early on during his career. Like many of his albums, Rundgren combined many styles and produced an album worth listening to, even all these years later.Read full review
