This is an essential and important title in the catalog of Franks works. The original release on vinyl coincided with my first true foray into the music that to this day holds the place of highest esteem in my musical heart. I wore out two copies of this double-record set well before its eventual re-release on CD. The songs here bear repeated listening as one constantly hears new things not noticed before, backing vocals, subtle auxilliary percussion, reverb tails from the UMRK live reverb room, slippery bass lines or just cool little guitar notes. Conceptual continuity also bring you back to reference bits from other albums and live recordings. The guitar solo "Rat Tomago" which was nominated for a Grammy the year of its release is a self contained universe of guitar mastery, combining visceral emotion and technical virtuosity and it scared the breakfast cereal out of me as an aspiring musician. I owned this album when it first came out in my 20's nearly 30 years ago. Losing it long ago I recently bought the CD on line. Again listening to it "the first time" had me laughing out loud. Not only is this album a musical masterpiece, it's very humorous. Zappa's lyrics are clever, witty and a lot of the time truth exagerated. Some lyrics will be offensive to some people, and I would recommend this album for mature adults only. In my opinion, this is Zappa's best album.
