It was fascinating to see Stephen King's TV miniseries of his famous horror novel, after having watched Stanley Kubrick's movie version of "The Shining" recently. In six hours, King was better able to convey the nuanced struggles of the central characters (and especially Jack Torrance), as the story builds to its horrific climax. Of course King has a lot of supernatural special effects, but overall, they are more in service to the story, whereas some of Kubrick's scary visuals struck me as visual non-sequitors. The cover of the DVD was a little worn, but I don't care about that. This 2 disc DVD edition was in perfect viewing condition, which is all that matters to me.

this book is an actual representation of stephen king's story...wendy's character is as strong as depicted in the book...unlike the meek submissive role played by duvall in the kuberick version...tony's role is captured well like the future danny he's supposed to be..unlike the "little fore finger"...characters such as horace derwent is also covered..along with the topiary instead of the hedge maze..although some may find the topiary animals a little cheesy...the woman in 217 was a whole lot scarier in this version...the "fire hose scare" is another addition. Some may find weber's performance not as immersed in the role as jack nicholsan...but my humble feeling is he has done justice in his own way....cause after all he is a resentful affectionate father pushed back to his old ways....one thing i'll accept is the music was a whole lot scarier in the kuberick version..that set the pace for the Overlook Hotel coming to life..which lacked in this version........but this is definitely a good buy...if u would like to see what the novel contained or how's the movie version after reading the novel..Read full review
I fail to fathom why all the reviews I read on eBay of "Stephen King's The Shining" seem to weakly, and almost apologetically, recommend this movie, especially compared to the Kubrick/Nicholson/Duvall film.Since a comparison between the two versions seems to be the requirement to discuss this film, I'll compare, too. Hey, I'll go all out - THIS made-for-TV film is "The Shining" that scared me. And I will not admit to any liking or respect for director Kubrick's version. Steven Weber's subtle performance as 'Jack Torrance' in " Stephen King's The Shining" adds the depth and emotion needed to make the King story work.Director Mick Garris in THIS version captures the spirit of the Shining. ( And I guess I am the only "King/Shining" fan that absolutely DETESTED Jack Nicholson in Kubrick's version.Nicholson's over-the-top,over-acting in every scene made that movie absolutely unbearable for all the wrong reasons. And his infamous ad-lib, " Here's Johnny!" had me groaning out loud in the theater.) This television version, "Stephen King's The Shining," is the only version for me. What an excellent scare - - no apologies!Read full review
Loved this mini-series. Had seen the original The Shining by Stanley Kubrick and hated it. I read The Shining when it came out and it was the scariest book, at the time, that I had ever read. This movie is so close to the book. I remember how scary I thought the topiary was when I read the book and the maze in the Kubrick version did not compare. Funny thing was that I watched this movie on the same night the Kubrick version was re-running on one of the movie channels. Jack Nicholson looks insane before the hotel ever gets to him -so it isn't a big stretch that he goes psycho on his family. My hubby, who by the way has not read the book enjoyed this version as well. This version of The Shining is the only one that does justice to the book. I would highly recommend it.
When I saw the original Kubrick film based on the same book, i was disappointed that the movie went so far astray from King's original idea. With this movie, done by the SciFi Channel, the story is told in a way much closer to the original, creepy story. Like Sci-Fi's other entries into the miniseries game (Earthsea, Merlin, Dune, Children of Dune, et al) The attention to detail is high and the story is better because of it. Excellent cinematography and very good casting makes this one a keeper. I still get hairs-on-the-back-of-my-neck feelings when I see this. the effects are less gore-ish and more ghostly for the most part. Be warned though that younger children will probably be scared by this, so preview it first. Being a 6-hour long miniseries, this isn't something you'd sit down to watch all in one night unless you were REALLY devoted, but the time spent in watching it is well spent.Read full review
