Although there were several folk jazz singers in late 70’s, few struck a cult vein in pop-jazz fans as Michael Franks did. He had that kind of dreamy sexy voice, somewhat reminiscent of Chris Isaak, but in a much higher pitch. Franks has always had the great ability to write seamless pop jazz songs with catchy soft hooks. For several people, their first indirect exposure to jazz was thru Michael Franks. “The Art of Tea” wasn’t Frank’s first cd, but it was his first major label debut. What strikes me as amazing was the quality of the studio musicians this ‘1st Timer’ assembled: (they must have known something that others did not about Michael) Horns were provided by both the Brecker Brothers and David Sanborn; Larry Carlton did the guitar work; Joe Sample provided the great emphasis on keyboards during punch marks in the rhythm. The cd contains the minor radio hit: Eggplant; Mr. Blue, and several other enjoyable tracks. Not a poor cut on the cd, although you will probably cringe the first few times when you hear the banal lyrics that Franks ‘scats’ out (such as Popsicle Toes, his first radio hit.) By then, you will be hooked on the pauses, the delivery, the excellent jazz playing. Great stuff once you get past the crazy lyrics. The backup band sells me on this cd, though. Few albums have impressed me with its jazz tightness like this has. It flows, it moves in its own unique Franks rhythm. One thing is for certain: you will never forget the cd once you’ve heard it twice. If you enjoyed this review, please click the button below for me! Thanks, Jeff Feezle of MacafeezRead full review

This CD highlights a great jazz artist singing some really smooth jazz tunes. Mr. Franks is a master of great lyrics and song topics. Songs such as "Eggplant" and "Popsicle Toes" are excellent examples of his fabulous songwriting abilities. You will hear some of the finest jazz musicians playing on this great CD. My favorite is Joe Sample on the electric piano. The wonderful combination of Michael Franks' easy and smooth vocals and fantastic musicians playing on great songs, make this CD a must listen. You won't be disappointed.
