I used to have this album but it was a long time ago and I can only guess that it disappeared that night I was busy fighting zombies (who knows?). I treated myself to a new copy and I am so pleased I did. This is still one of the most remarkable debut albums ever released. More over it has stood the test of time and there are several reasons for this. Melissa Etheridge writes androgynously about the trials and intimate moments we have all experienced at one time or another; gay, straight, teen, woman, no one is excluded . "Bring Me Some Water" was the biggest hit from this album and rightfully so, still gets airplay. Each song is a well told story of a moment captured. Clear, precise and honest! Not glossed, overly dramatic, or forced but just....true. From "Like The Way I Do" in it's tearful fury to "Don't You Need" in it's begging for answers to "Occasionally", simplicity, in it's vunerable beauty; the tracklist is that which gives a voice to the emotions of relationships and the questions they raise, that we are not all brave enough to speak. The music is genuine (not unlike the artist herself), even raw. The album is not overproduced and the music and lyrics are truly symbiotic - there is no chance that the message will get lost in translation. A mark of a true artist. The follow up album was "Brave and Crazy" which has a different energy that comes from experience and is just as sensational as this album. I have 8 Melissa Etheridge albums, seen her on TV, seen her interviewed and seen her live. What you see is what you get. There is not pretense here and an artist that can back it up live and walk the walk is not so common these days. And while this debut album can stand on it's own, thank you very much, it marks the early artistic life of the wonderful evolution of the Rock and Roll Goddess and incredible axewoman that is Melissa Etheridge.Read full review
I am a huge fan of Melissa Etheridge-I just think her music is awesome. She puts alot of feeling and her own actual experiences in them. That to me is what makes music great. I bought the cd because I have a collection of her cd's. This particular one was stolen from my car in 2004 when someone decided to invade my property and break into my car. I was in HEAVEN when I spotted this cd on ebay. You can not find it in the stores, I've tried. Thanks to an ebayer I have my set of 9 cd's again. Melissa Etheridge is great, I would recommend her music to anyone. Her music is very personal and that to me makes a WONDERFUL MUSICIAN!
