Miles fluid trumpet in an ethereal fusion of Spanish classic and modern jazz, this does not seem to have aged atall since its origin some thirty plus years ago.Rodrigo's concerto de Aranjuez is a meditative and magical evocation of spain and Miles interpretation is flawless. Atmospheric and abstract, cool and intense.
Roderigo's Concierto de Aranjuez has long been a favourite classical piece for me. Incredibly beautiful, delicate, sad and yet strong and yet triumphant in the end. When I first heard Miles Davis play it I just had to rush to buy the CD. I wasn't disappointed. Davis' playing is stunning yet respectful to the original. The orchestration is close to classical. There are three different versions of the piece. They are all excellent. The rest of the CD is what the title suggest a series of sketches which seem to convey a sense of flamboyance, gypsy and moorish influences, and Spain's military and colonial past. Davis' plays with passion and immaculate timing throughout.
First bought this as a cassette many years ago, but now on CD it so much brighter and clearer. A brilliant remastering of a beautiful jazz original. Maybe just one too many "bonus tracks" (ie repeats !), but a real classic by one of the masters of modern jazz nevertheless.
Atmospheric. I love Rodrigo's concerto de Aranjuez and to hear it played by Miles is something else! The other tracks are good too.
