On the first listen, this album seemed very repetitive from track-to-track. The rhythm is very similar in many songs and the guitar riffs are fast, but sound the same from a brief skim through the album. The good news is, if you're into this style of music, it is done very well on "The Fall Of Rome." The guitar is very technical and also incorporates the standard breakdowns one would expect from Winter Solstice... so brutal a sound! Drums are very powerful on this album, with more double-bass than you can shake a stick at. For better or for worse (depending on your preference), the sound of repetitive "machine-gun" double bass is quite prevalent in Winter Solstice's songs. Occasional blast beats should be expected, as well. I should mention, the fifth track, actually sharing the album's title, is totally different from the rest of the album. It is a very technical, classical-sounding piece incorporating two acoustic guitars and piano in the background with no vocals. This helps show off the band's skill in areas beyond the unmercifully brutal metal they are known for. Then again, don't the best hardcore/metal bands tend to have an excellent acoustic style hidden in their albums? Yes. Yes, they do. Personally, I love this style of music, so this album has frequented my cd-player since I have owned the album. I find that albums like this and some by Mortal Treason require many plays before you really appreciate what the artist has created. Truly brutal with a vague Christian message throughout many tracks on the album, the band is comprised of believers, but I don't think it is especially outright or evident from their lyrics. They take a middle-of-the-road approach to being a Christian band (I'm not criticizing them for this, just commenting. I don't think it is bad that they express their beliefs in deeper metaphors than some.) Also worth noting: I'm certain this band broke up some time ago, so this album will likely be their last. I snagged it for a decent price and would recommend it to someone looking to satiate the thirst for something fast and brutal that will make your head spin while you thrust your clenched fists into the air and towards the floor (but not those around you).Read full review
