This is an important record in rock history bridging the gap between new wave pop and the 90's ambient and techno cultures. It comes from a group that gave us pop hits in the 80's (It's my Life- later covered by Gwen Stefani and No Doubt). This group turned to a different type of music after 10 years in the music business experimenting in something quite different. The result is an approach that has influenced the music business ever since. Part jazz, part rock, part world beat, the entire cd is a full length suite, blended together subtly to form a whole new artistic impression. Usually rated as one of the top 100 cd's ever, this is a work that will sound strange at first, but will grow on you. I prefer this to their follow-up Laughing Stock which is similar. I feel this song cycle is stronger. This is mood music at its' finest. EnjoyRead full review
A good album by a great band, close to the pinnacle of the soothing and poignant essence of Talk Talk's later post-rock or "art rock" genre.

Given the fact that this originally came out in the late '80's, it's amazing to hear how much they influenced (whether intentionally or not) the early Shoegaze/Brit-Pop sound of the '90's (e.g. The Verve)... definitely one of those records you should play when you want to come down, relax, or have your moods played with.
There is no possible price can be placed on this timeless, beautiful art. There are no true adaquate words.

This is an amazingly beautiful album of songs. I'm just sorry it took me so long to notice it, since it's from the early 90s.
