Having bought St Radigunds back in the early 70’s I have always wanted to get Old Boot Wine and here we have a selection of tracks from both these abums plus tracks from the last album Bells Boot and Shambles. What a feast this is - there is everything on here from Acid Folk through to Prog Rock and all stops in between. Many tracks are like mini rock opera’s in themselves and you have to keep checking that you are on the same track such is the diversity of rhythm and mood. This very quintessential English band cut these albums in a 2 year period from 1971-1973 whilst studying at Canterbury and most tracks are Martin Cockerham compositions with Martin on guitar/vocals ably assisted by the delightful vocals of Barbara Gaskin. Julian Cusack plays a mean violin (and piano) with Steve Borrill underpinning everything with his fluid bass lines. Dave Mattacks from Fairport was drafted in on drums and puts in his usual deft performance. For the new listener probably the tracks from St Radigunds take a few plays to get into but the tracks from the next two albums are more immediately accessible. Admittedly I was already a fan but I found this a great CD to get. Well worth buying if you don't have any Spirogyra in your collection. That was until I discovered "A Canterbury Tale" which has all the tracks from all 3 albums on it! but I bought this one first! Myles Barrett.Read full review
