Before this album came out, people were really anticipating it. They were thinking it would be back to the roots of old Metallica, with the thrash, speed metal kind of stuff. In a way, it is. It many more ways, it isn't. The CD comes in nice paper packaging with the CD, the bonus DVD (of them rehearsing every track), the booklet (which contains all lyrics and a picture of the band), and a slip of paper which gives you access to more Metallica music online. The music is very heavy, no doubt metal, but I think they tried too hard when they were making it. They were trying to make it sound raw, agressive, and angry. But they ended up with raw, agressive, angry, and uninspired music. They simply overdid it. However this doesn't mean it's all bad. Instrumentals - Even though the production is horrible (which I'll get to later), I like the guitar riffs, and the drumming. It is very fitting for this kind of music, and Lars does a good job with the double bass. Concept - They wanted heavier, more agressive thrash, and they tried. They deserve credit for that. Once in a while, I will listen to this album. But, it is very hard to listen to the whole songs. They get boring, and choppy. If they improved the production, added a solo here and there, and told Hetfield to sing in key to match with the music all the time, it would have been an enjoyable record to listen to. It is only those specific things that make this album bad.Read full review
St. Anger to me is a raw expression of just that - Anger. From the pounding rhythms of 'Frantic' to the satanic sounding 'Some Kind of Monster' to the slithering 'Sweet Amber' this album is full of dark energies. However there is something almost therapeutic to shouting 'kill kill kill' repeatedly at the top of your lungs. The opening track 'Frantic' could be described as the reason that Metallica are considered the godfathers of speed metal, this develops in to the slower but just as heavy 'St. Anger' - the title track of the aptly named album. Other highlights include 'Dirty Window', 'Shoot Me Again', 'The Unnamed Feeling' and 'All Within My Hands' but all the songs on the album are worth a listen. By now if you are still reading then you are probably thinking about buying this album. If you are I would recommend already being a fan of heavy, speed, grunge or thrash metal to fully appreciate this album, if you are not then it's always good to listen to new things but before spending your hard earned cash then find a site where they offer previews of the tracks to save wasting your money on something you wouldn't enjoy. As a by note, if you're wondering I rated this album 'good' because of its limited appeal otherwise it would have been an excellent in my opinion.Read full review
I first heard snippets of this at Donnington a few years ago. it struck me as the sound of a once awesome band that had lost it's way and was following the "down-tuned, no solo's" route of all the rubbish nu-metal stuff out at the time. After watching "some kind of monster" it's easy to see why this album sounds so furious. Not since Pantera's "far beyond driven" have I heard an album of such brooding intent. I love Metallica, seen them more times than have had hot dinners, grew up with Master / Ride / And justice as the background to my early teens. After load / Reload, which for any other band would be awesome albums I was a bit hesitant with this album. It does drag on a bit in places but once you cut through that if you want to listen to something when your in a bad mood this sums it up perfectly.Read full review
