Canadian Bruce Cockburn is regular winner of his country's version of the Grammy, and "Rocket Launcher" from this album was a hit in the US where he is also a well-known artist, songwriter and respected virtuoso guitarist. Fellow musicians also know who he is - Bono quotes a lyric from "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" from this album on "God Part II" - but for some reason he has been ignored in the UK. Our loss. This album is not quite his best (my favourite is "Humans"), but it is still full of great songs, with strong melodies and lyrics with poetry, depth and substance. Put that with the usual high standard of playing and production and you have a classic. The only caveat would be the occasional bit of heavy-handed 80s production now sounding a bit dated, but even then the songs shine through. Still turning out great music, if you get a chance to see Bruce Cockburn in concert on one of his occasional UK tours, take it. It will probably be a small, intimate venue, and it will almost definitely be a fully committed performance and an evening to remember.Read full review
