Styx like many successful supergroups from the early 80's now rely on the input of 1 or 2 of the stalwarts from their heyday, in this case messrs Shaw and Young. The replacement of Dennis de Young by Lawrence Gowan has never quite paid off in my opinion because of Gowan's inferior vocal ability - The first track Rockin'the Paradise bears this out. Gowan's own composition A Criminal Mind is a clever song but his vocals don't do the piece justice. Gowan's keyboard work however is competent and up to the job. The 2 best tracks on the album are Love is a Ritual with nice harmonies and Halfpenny Twopenny which is one of the greatest rock anthems of all time. Apart from Snowblind, Crystal Ball and Miss America the rest of it is standard fare. Would recommend listening to their early 80's albums.
