Liner Note Author: Brave Captain. Illustrator: Pete Fowler. The Welsh rock quintet Super Furry Animals are the mixtape masters for this edition of the various-artists compilation series UNDER THE INFLUENCE. As anyone familiar with the Super Furries' music might assume, the band's installment is eclectic and exuberant. The lynchpins of the group's sound--lush 1960s psychedelia (the Beach Boys' "Feel Flows"), punk (MC5's "Kick Out the Jams"), funky R&B (Sly & the Family Stone's "Family Affair"), and electronica (Underworld's "Rez") are all here. Bringing up the end of the disc are several entries on the techno, house, and IDM fronts, including Humanoid's "Stakker Humanoid," Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash," and Hardfloor's "Acperience," all of which are excellent examples smartly designed, intensely propulsive electronica. In keeping with the Super Furries' whiplash stylistic aesthetic, there are some curveballs thrown in for good measure, including the downtempo reggae of Dawn Penn's "You Don't Love Me (No No No)," a selection from a George Bizet opera, and a tune from fellow Wales oddball popsters Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. The mixture of such divergent styles on this dose of UNDER THE INFLUENCE is surprisingly invigorating and plenty of fun.
