I came to ELP quite late in life - long after I'd discovered the other greats of Prog. And this was the first album I bought. It was a bit of a shock after the narrative ballads of early Genesis and the soaring waiflike vocals of Jon Anderson. In fact, I still find this quite an angry piece of work; including evocations of battles and expressions of distaste for either God or organised religion (I've never quite figured out which is the butt here). Having said that, there's humour aplenty in this album, and some really fine musicianship too. An earlier reviewer once wrote, "If you like Kylie Minogue or Ultravox don't buy this album" but I can see no reason why people who enjoy these shouldn't buy "Tarkus". If you tend to like your music less stark (sTarkus?)and more reassuring, less forceful and more background, you'll find Tarkus a challenge; but I hope, like me, you'll find it a challenge you come to cherish. Happy listening, whoever you are.Read full review
If you know early ELP, Pictures, Trilogy and ELP, you will enjoy this one. Superb prog rock with their little quips in the form of "Jeremy Bender" and "Are you ready Eddie" A tribute to thier engineer Eddie Offord. Not thier best work but to keep that standard would be impossible, however still an excellent album. If you like Kylie Minogue or Ultravox DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM.
Excellent trip back to the early 70,s when I used to listen to this from my sisters vinyl collection
