This Mike Stand side-bar, aside from The Altar Boys and his solo albums, is a welcome foray back into the rocking punkster that was once so important to Christian music. While the lyrics may be a bit more mature here than in the A-Boys days, he still knows how to put together a rocking band. There is little acoustic stuff akin to his 3 or so solo albums. While the verses are typically profound, some choruses are somewhat lacking in this department and can be quite repetitive. Free and Red are examples of such one-word choruses. Free is a suspicious look into the freedom that Christ offers. Save Me is a cry for reassurance. Portrait of a King slows things down momentarily for some retropection. Think It Over calls for the introspection that the events of life demand. Don't Look Away is a call for compassion. Armistice Day is a rocking spiritual warfare tune. Red is a warning about the end times that are approaching. The mellow songs at the end of the disk could have been produced better. The guitars lack clarity and the vocals are obscured. Ballads shouldn't be as noisy as heard here. They should have been more acoustic like Mike's solo albums. Otherwise, these closers may have been the icing on the cake. Stand's vocals are stellar again and the guitars are solid. The drums provide the listener with a wide array of beats and fillers. This is not old school punk like back in the Altar Boys days, but it is certianly a welcomed addition from an enduring icon.Read full review
