The first time I listened to Testimony, I knew I would likely buy the live DVD. It's great music, be you a christian or no. For anyone who likes Spock's Beard or Transatlantic, this is a no deal - specially because you have the great presence of Mike Portnoy (being also a DT fan, to me this was the icing on the cake). From a technical point of view, this DVD isn't all that great. Its ratio is 4:3, the video quality is poor (for a show recorded in 2003), and it doesn't have any subtitle (come on guys, it doesn't hurt to put at least english subtitles for us, foreign viewers). The sound is simple stereo. Anyway, I believe Neal Morse had to pay it on its own, so I can understand the less then sharp quality / authoring. On the other hand, you get two discs: the first one is the show. The second has some extra presentations (on the same show) which includes "We all need some light" and "Stranger in your soul" (Transatlantic for the win). It's also have a cool "making of / on the tour" documentary which is nice to see. Great addition to anyone who likes this kind of sound, and specially to those who are looking for a more "progressive" gospel experience ;)Read full review
I had been looking for this disc for about a year now and probably should have just purchased it off Neals' website, but I am a bargain shopper %^). After receiving the disc, I can (without any reservations) highly recommend this music DVD performance. I was a Spock's Beard fan for years and have always appreciated his musical influence and contribution to the progressive music genre. He left Spock's Beard, because he felt God was moving him to do so. I was a taken a little aback when he did this, but now there is no question why he had to do so. He was definitely the "brains" behind the Beard! Being a Christian myself, I eagerly awaited to hear his solo efforts. Neal has not disappointed!! The man is a one man band. He can play any instrument with bravado! Each release since leaving Spock's Beard just gets better and better! Testimony is a true progressive rock classic, even if you are not a Christian, his musical authority will move you. Because Neal is not a mass market aka. popular artist, I am sure he has a limited budget when it comes to production. But, I must say, this concert is amazing! He has so many excellent musicians backing him up, including my all-time fave drummer, Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater. This live progressive musical journey is basically the story of Neals' conversion to accept Christ into his heart and how he lived before and after the "Light" entered his life. This is a very long concert that was filmed in Europe (he is more popular there than in the U.S.) go figure. This is the case with most talented progressive rock bands, sorry to say. I think that we in America are flooded with so much "junk" pop and rock music and have lost touch with actually listening to music that has meaning and touches us. I can honest say that this live performance has helped strengthen my faith by his "Testimony". Christianity is almost becoming taboo in America and I applaud Neal Morse for penning music from his heart. He is an American virtuoso musician who unfortunately been overlooked partly because of the bias in the music business and partly from the bland-o-matic music culture we in America have adopted. I also give kudos to Neal for putting quality production together, which he probably has to fund mostly on his own. Christian or not, if you are a fan of progressive rock like Rush, Dream Theater, Flower Kings, King's X and my new favorite Porcupine Tree, you must buy this DVD and add it to your collection. About the only negative thing I have to say about this DVD is that it is recorded in Dolby Digital 2.0. I wish he would have recorded it in either DD 5.1 or DTS, but I am sure $$ restricted this from happening. Maybe, if Neal becomes more popular he can do this in the future. All Progheads out there, buy this, you will not be disappointed! I pray that God continues to bless Neal in his future endeavures! He sure has in this performance. I am waiting to get Neals' newest recording "?". Yea, that's right, the title of the album is just a question mark and it is also an amazing piece of "progology". People already have websites devoted to figuring out what the album is saying lyrically. It's pretty deep. I have now become a life-long fan of Neals and look forward to his next project which he is in the studio producing right now! Godspeed Neal! You will need it, in a world that is becoming more and more humanistic.Read full review
I own just about everything that Spocks beard and Neal Morse have released, but had'nt purchased the "Testimony" live DVD yet, so finding it at an excellent price and having won the bid, I was awaiting it's arrival. I had my gall bladder removed the day before it arrived and was just sitting around in pain, when it showed up in the mail quicker than I had anticipated. I popped it right in and soon found myself absorbed in the incredible musicianship of Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy and a 5 piece band that included electric cello and violin, mandolin, percussionist and Randy George holding down the bass lines. Soon the aches and pains of post surgery were lessened and I was treated to great sound and crystal clear photography that wasnt annoying and skipping all over constantly. Thanks again Neal!Read full review
