The first time I ever heard the music of Tangerine Dream was in the excellent Tom Cruise film 'Risky Business' (1983), which I loved watching. After listening to Thief (1981) in 1995, I then became a disciple of the band. Tangerine Dream are a brilliant German psychedelic synthesiser/electropop band, formed in Berlin in 1969. Forget Erasure, The Pet Shop boys, Kraftwerk and even the almighty Human League, Tangerine Dream were the ultimate, greatest ever synth guru's, their music was light years ahead of their competition. Tangerine Dream's music can be described as a mesmeric, psychedelic, pulsating, extremely soothing synthesiser beat, a form of electronic psychedelia or soma for the senses. For just under 41 minutes, this album Thief (1981) is probably their finest work of the now famous 13 Virgin studio albums they produced. It is my favourite Tangerine Dream album of all time. A work of sheer genius, hear it and be converted. The album is an intelligent, computer effect soundscape, with psychedelic drum/trumpet like throbbing, pounding synthesiser beats. The opening and best track is 'Beach Theme' extended later on in the album to the longer version 'Beach Scene'. Tracks like Dr.Destructo and Diamond Diary and the rest of the album are just pure aural tranquillity to listen to. This particular issue was a very rare Japanese release in lime green with an inside CD inlay picture of the now famous very beautiful neon light UFO scene above a cool and sharp icy blue walkway. If you want to discover the band or want an extremely good chill out album then I strongly recommend this. Another Tangerine Dream album you may like if you like thief, is Stratosfear (1976), which I also strongly recommend. Over the years I have become an extremely big fan of the band, I worship their music and have loads of their albums, even their really cool early concept albums such as Alpha Centauri, Atem, and Zeit. Overall it must be the case 'In heaven they must listen to Tangerine Dream'.Read full review
Classic tangerine dream at its best.Have got this on vinyl but have decided to get all my vast tangerine collection on cd.Listening to this again just reminds me why they are still going after more than 30 years
Tangerine Dream made some great film scores, I've only seen one or two of the films they are for, the best one being "Firestarter" in 1984.
