I've been a Marillion fan since 1984. Love the band, love their music, love what they mean to the musical world. Some albums are always better than others, especially when releasing number 16 studio album. This one, "This Strange Engine" released in 1997, has turned out to be one of my favorites. Always exploring new sounds, the band gives up hints towards influences by the Beatles, the Police, and Caribbean sounds. Some acoustic, some hard rock guitar/keyboard tunes, 'Man of a Thousands Faces' starts the record strongly, One fine day takes us back to early Pink Floyd sounds with a modern twist. Estonia is a resounding, heartfelt rendition that gives us hope in the fact of tragedy. Memory of Water, while essential is the weakest link in my opinion. The album ends with the treatise of Steve Hogath's life story set to music in an epic piece that is the highlight of the album. Even if you're not a Marillion fan, this is one to have!Read full review
