Being an avid Tower of Power fan, I decided to extend my CD library, in the hope that I could further my enjoyment of their earliest 1970's material. East Bay Grease is from 1970, a period that I have personal interest in U.S. music and both in terms of its social and economic history. The strongest track for me is 'Sparkling in the Sand' which culimates both the brassy jazzy feel which is distinctly American, but also incorporates the bands Latin American influences. The other tracks are funky and also reflect the social ideas of the time i.e. 'getting high' as illustrated in 'Social Lubrication' but most of the tracks are delivered with 'power in the tower' by their vocalist Rufus Miller, who adds his very soulful and bluesy dimensions to each track. Other popular tracks are, 'Knock Yourself Out' and 'Back on the Streets Again' both of which are on various TOP compilations. No, my knowledge of their fusion of musical style was not extended here, although the CD was definitely worth a listen, especially for all my retro compatriots.Read full review
