Metheny sounds great as usual! I have played guitar my whole life and it is always a humbling experience to listen to Pat. I miss Lyle on this one though. Christian and Antonio sound amazing on everything. "Calvin's Keys" is a burning blues where the interaction of the 3 musicians is great. "When we were free" is a 3/4 thing where Pat plays the synth guitar and his normal guitar and has some great solo work. The thing that impresses me most about this record is its creativity. Creativity is definitely what's missing in todays music and just in life in general. In New York where I'm from there used to be so many creative outlets like clubs to hear live music, art stores, specialty stores where you could find "unique" items, they have all been replaced by Duane Reade, Gaps and Starbucks. This type of music holds true to that "uniqueness" and is what more records should strive to be, not in terms of the music necessarily, but the overall creative vibe. Thank You so much Pat!!!!!!Read full review
I actually heard this cd on Sirius satellite radio on their jazz channel. Pat him self was hosting and going track by track explaining the story and inspiration behind each song and his working with the other musicians on the tracks. I was so pleased with it, not because im an uber fan of his already, because he gets back to some classical jazz sound and his usual style is still there as well. Great CD. BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!!!!!
