"The band’s proggier elements were replaced by more streamlined pop songs that were heavily influenced by early-Beatles and the burgeoning New Wave scene, most notably in songs like 'Shark Attack'..."
I've been trying of late to refurbish my music collection, not only purchasing CD versions of vinyl albums already owned, and vice versa, but also the stuff I've always wanted to own and never got around to! This album was almost entirely a new experience for me as, although I love Split Enz' music, I had only heard one track from this album before, the glorious "takes-me-back" pop ditty I GOT YOU! This track was up first and set me up nicely for the rest of the album, as it was closely followed by the punked-up SHARK ATTACK, one of my personal favourites! Sit still while this is on, I dare you!
This album is the corner store of albums - always ready to give you a little bit of whatever you want, be it the gorgeous ballad I HOPE I NEVER or the more up-tempo songs such as I WOULDN'T DREAM OF IT and NOBODY TAKES ME SERIOUSLY. There are two instrumental pieces, which normally I don't care too much for - I prefer to have something to sing along to! - but somehow it works here, and I find myself singing along anyway!!!
The songwriting of this album is largely divided between the brotherhood that is Neil and Tim Finn! I find that you can usually tell just by listening which Finn has written a particular song, their styles of writing are that diverse, but both seem to blend beautifully when pieced together. The same goes for their voices:- different as chalk and cheese when separate but like milk and honey when together!
And as a final reference to the songwriting on this album, one must mention the purely brilliant MISSING PERSON. Written by Neil Finn, this song sounds great even today, and when I mentally go back in time to 1980 (as I often tend to do!) this particular piece would have been way ahead of its time by at least a few years, and yet still manages to invoke the spirit of the day.
The ONLY complaint I had about this particular CD was that there was very little information on the cover sleeve; the outside cover and a list of tracks was all the knowledge I gained! I like lyrics, I like photos, I like to have a little something extra. But at the end of the day, the music itself on this album was all the "something extra" I needed. Who needs printed lyrics when you can just listen to the album twenty times a day until you know all the words (and take no notice when the kids complain!)
Basically, anything you buy with the name FINN attached to it is going to be somewhat of a masterpiece, whatever format it takes. Of the two, I grew to prefer the musical meanderings of Finn the Younger (Neil), but Tim is indeed a highly talented and respected musician in his own right! This album represents to me the point at which Tim gained a certain level of maturity in his songwriting! This is also Neil's "coming of age" - it's where I feel his singing, guitar-playing and songwriting all seemed to suddenly gel and his talent began to shine through. So maybe this is where the album title came from - it certainly seems to me as though the whole band at this point decided to get serious, get real, and let us see who they actually were as people and musicians - in fact, to let us see... yes, it's coming... wait for it... their TRUE COLOURS!Read full review
EXCELLENT ALBUM !!!!! Crowded House(One)at their best.Anybody who was "alive" in the early 80's should have had a vinyl copy of this.Listen and you will get adolecent joy, combined with heart felt pain and emotion.Imagine James May(Top Gear)as the lead singer 30 odd years ago and you might get my drift, hey don't worry if don't because "Nobody Takes Me Seriously Anyway."
