Additional information
THE TUNES OF TWO CITIES is the second in a planned trilogy. The Residents set out to show a clashing of two "cultures," The Moles and The Chubbs, beginning with MARK OF THE MOLE. This second installment offers the music of these two cultures, prior to the conflict that flared up and informs all of part one. The album alternates back and forth between the music of the two "cultures." Comprised solely of instrumentals, the band's signature approach of simple melodies and dense, sometimes foreboding landscapes is perfect for this fictitious history. A third installment to resolve this convoluted tale never appeared, though THE BIG BUBBLE ("Part Four Of The Mole Trilogy") presented a band, sharing the name of the album title, which figured in the story. The Residents also embarked on their first large-scale tour in 1982 and '83, taking this work on the road (performances of which are documented on MOLE SHOW, recorded live in Holland).
