According to Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson, this 1979 album grew out of time they spent at casinos in Monaco and captures not only the connection between music and organized gambling but the emotional extremes of the casino floor. Although derided early on by some people for "sounding like Disco," this album can now be recognized as one of APP's best ever, and has certainly been one of the most commercially successful. The original album didn't contain a single subpar or filler song. All are artistic masterpieces. The 2008 re-release I bought contains several bonus tracks and detailed liner notes offering a glimpse into this extraordinary studio band's creative process. For less than $10 plus shipping, this CD is a very good buy. The version of _The Gold Bug_ offered on it is the original one, which is far superior to the synthesizer-based one available for download on for-pay music download sites. If you've never heard APP's music before, this is a good introduction to it.Read full review
I have all the APP CD's, compilations etc. Did I really need the added bonus cd. No, not really. But I wanted it anyway. Just listened to it today. Just the instrumental long version of 'Time' was worth it for me. It it a beautiful bitter/sweet song on its own. As an instrumental, still amazingly beautiful. It is kind of fun hearing the rough takes and how the songs are layered together. If you are a fan, buy it! I feel it was worth it. Also extra written information about Eric and Alan with the CD.
The original album alone was great, and the bonus tracks make it even better. These aren't necessarily the best bonus tracks from an Alan Parsons CD, (I enjoyed, "Eye in the Sky" tracks better, but it is an addded bonus.

Solid collection of alternative rock songs, bolstered by string of "gambling" songs that tell a short story. Two songs that charted make this one of the top Alan Parsons albums. This version also had earlier versions and short snippets of a few songs that give insight into the evolution of the album. I highly recommend this album for its technical prowess and strong musical performances.
Great sounding CD. I use it to test classic audio systems.
