This, for me, is the star of the three 1960s Sandy Denny/ Fairport albums. The musicianship and selection of songs make this one of those rare things, the complete album - an album where every track is a pearl. Also, it contains the perfect, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?".

This remaster, with bonus tracks and expensive sleeve notes CDs, is a huge upgrade on the original CD release. Sandy Denny was still with the band and original line-up was otherwise more or less complete, although Ian Matthews only appears on one track. A must for any true Fairport fan.

Where did that name come from? "Bricking it" sure, but un-half beats me. Tis a great album -Fairport in their prime - "Where does the time go " sublime. A fairport classic.

Released in 1969 Unhalfbricking is perhaps Fairport Convention's finest LP. Three Bob Dylan songs, two each from Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny topped off with a traditional folk song to their own arrangement. (The remastered and expanded CD released in 2003 has an additional two bonus tracks, another one from Dylan and one from Roger McGuinn). Forty minutes of fine music from a truly talented group. Si To Dois Partir, a French translation of Dylan's If You Gotta Go, Go Now provided an unlikely chart hit for them, and Judy Collins covered Who Knows Where The Time Goes to great effect. Tragically most of the band were involved in a motorway crash that claimed the life of drummer Martin Lamble just before this album was released. The following year the group released Liege & Lief which saw a move back to more traditional material, so Unhalfbricking stands as a testament to a quintet of musicians possibly at the height of the combined creative powers. Buy it and enjoy.Read full review
