It is easy to think of past music as somehow more honest or pure, it is one of the classic discussions over the generation gap. Many bands such as the Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have bridged that gap- although the constant presence of merchandise and repackaging of their records doesn't hurt- because the music is very good. The United States of America is a band who made a single album and its members are not household names. Joe Byrd, the lead singer and main composer is known to record aficionados because of this one amazing record. The music could easily be labeled psychedelic and its 1968 creation fits that era of groovy experimentation. The USA used cutting edge electronics and no guitars to produce an edgy forward-looking masterpiece that doesn't sound like many of its contemporaries. Yes there are some trippy effects and weird moments fit for a light show but no two songs sound alike and the quality of composition and recording put it up alongside "Sgt Pepper's..." or "Pet Sounds" any day.Read full review
