Ms. Iyall (pronounced "Ile" or "aisle") and the guys in the band had something special, like The Doors and Jim Morrison, or Mick Jagger and The Stones. This was Romeo Void's 4th and last album: I, for one, was sad to hear it. One helluva band! Ms. Iyall's languid vocal style is honed to a fine edge. All of their albums are beautifully produced. I refuse to pick a favorite, but this one is brilliant. The obvious hit is "A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing)": "...A girl in trouble is a temporary thing. Tenderly, she talks on the phone. There's no need for her to be afraid. She takes care of business, keeps a cool head..." My personal favorite is 'Just Too Easy'. It's as good as 'Never Say Never': How fair can I be, how big this mistake? You have a cigarette, and I have a headache. Nothing makes me lonelier than a phone call to you. You're waitin' for nothing to be nowhere soon. Tomorrow you'll pick up the paper like you do. Turn to the sports pages, the financial news. What escapes your attention is easily read. You look like you think you'd be better off dead. You're always fallin' apart. It was just too easy to break your heart. It was just too easy to break your heart. What's been paid for in misery's been bought back with luck. I ache for the truth like you break from my touch. The mirror I'm watching won't tell what to say, or how to explain that I'm going away. In a palace of lights that dim on command, the wind machine works to cool me again. On the top of the building, six flights up, I watch an impotent city go up and you--- You're always falling apart. It was just too easy to break your heart..." Here's a verse from another near-hit, "Out On My Own'": "...I was the girl who tore up the streets. House on the hill was not my dream. I was the one who had to run free. Had to run wild, nobody running with me. Out on my own. Thought I knew what I wanted, Thought I got what I needed...' The title song, "Instincts", is a defiant knock-out: she's letting you know that she failed, and is leaving Romeo Void: "I don't trust my eyes. They're so easily swayed. Beauty is anxious, To be seen a certain way. I trust your instincts. I'm going your way. I trust your instincts. I get what you say..." The band's instrumental, "Going To Neon" is a classic. Nice synth work. Another favorite is "Six Days And One": "...I found out, In these long days without you, Distance equals loss, Plus time. Absence, And I've gone farther. Absence, And I've gone too far..." "Billy's Birthday" is about the guilt associated with shirking obligations: "...Old friends sometimes call me. I write their numbers down. They aren't surprised when I don't call--- When I'm in town. It's Billy's birthday, tomorrow night. Billy's birthday tomorrow night. It would not be right to miss it, It would not be right to miss it. It would not be right!..." Ms. Iyall has a knack for transforming the mundane into poetry without a wasted syllable. (If you like Talking Heads, you'll like this: Romeo Void is also rhythmically addictive.) I never memorized any of these lyrics: they just stuck.Read full review
