This CD is one of the my ALL time favorites!! Romantically he just hits on every level! You can feel yourself saying/feeling the same emotion he is putting out there....I am a musician (drummer) of many years and it will always bring a tear to my eyes whenever I sit down with this treasure! The sound is so raw and in my opinion that really helps get across the grits and gravy of his lyrics....I would recommend this CD to any and all!!! ENJOY!!!
I only wish you could give 2 ratings.Vocals/Songwriting ...BELOW AVERAGE.INSTRUMENTATION..particularly the Guitar work of Richard Lloyd , ABOVE AVERAGE ,that's right ," The Richard Lloyd" , of Television fame,one of the most important guitarist's in rock history .However Sweet's,cheesy sing-songy rhyming is uncomfortable and quite frankly childish.Sweet comes off as self-important,one track about a "Inflatable Sex Doll" Does she talk...starts off with Sweet speaking "Now time for a sick one"...????? My advice if you are a guitar player..GET IT!! Lloyd's work is brilliant,,,really a guitar clinic!!! Sweet ?? Hell man get the Shags History of The World ..at least it's authentic garbage.

I love Matthew Sweet's records and this is the best Matthew Sweet record. Robert Quine on guitar. Quine is a master guitarist that a lot of people don't know about. This record is real education. Great songs, blazing guitar, an instant classic that more should know about.
If your looking for a break-up CD, then this is a good choice. I purchased this for the song Girlfriend. It is probally his best known song. Divine Intervention was another song that had gotten alot of airplay when this CD was released. The rest of the songs are pretty solid. I liked it overall.
